The Mountaineers Foundation is dedicated to passing the best possible environmental legacy to ensuing generations. The Foundation, working through our volunteer board serves The Mountaineers and others who are committed to the responsible stewardship and active enjoyment of the beauty and diversity of our natural resources. The Foundation promotes the long view of stewardship by building and maintaining strong relationships with both donors and grantees based on mutual trust and openness.
The Mountaineers Foundation is a registered 501(c)(3) organization that is proud to be affiliated with, but is separate from The Mountaineers Club. The Foundation provides financial support for a wide range of environmental projects conducted by The Mountaineers, other nonprofit organizations, and individuals. A complete list of grants awarded are available here.
General Fund:
The Foundation maintains a General Fund, which is used to support grants for relatively small, short-term projects covering the gamut of environmental issues. Several times each year, our Grant Screening Committee reviews and prioritizes grant applications and provides funding based on a number of factors outlined in our public grant guidelines. Funded projects have addressed a wide range of environmental issues, from wildlife crossings to climate protection, and in a wide variety of ways, including education, research, preservation, and more. The General Fund also occasionally supports larger environmental projects conducted inside and outside the Club, where such projects are a particularly strong match with the Foundation’s mission and other sources of Foundation funding are unavailable.
Dedicated Funds:
The Foundation periodically establishes dedicated or restricted funds, which allow donors to make contributions that will be used only in support of designated projects. Restricted funds are typically established to support longer-term, higher-budget projects. Some of these projects are conducted by The Foundation, such as the Property Acquisition Fund, used to acquire land for important conservation purposes. Other projects are conducted by the Club, such as the the construction of the climbing rock at the Club’s new headquarters or the Mountaineering-oriented library that is open to the public. Funds supporting projects conducted by the Club are frequently based on a fiscal sponsorship agreement between The Foundation and the Club, allowing the Club to solicit tax-deductible donations from individuals and other organizations.
Rhododendron Preserve:
The Foundation owns and maintains one important property – The Rhododendron Preserve in Kitsap County – which is open to the public and adjacent to developed land owned by the Club. The Foundation’s stewardship of the Preserve includes financial support, volunteer work parties, and conservation programming.
