This program was started in the Tacoma Branch of the Mountaineers by Jo Backus. Jo's goals were to expose inner city and disadvantaged young people to nature and the environment to awaken their self-awareness and provide a sense of purpose and meaning in their lives. These outings were a great success. Sadly, Jo and two others were killed in a tragic mountaineering accident on Shark Fin Tower on July 10, 2005. Many donations in Jo's memory have come to the Foundation to support this wonderful program. The Foundation is proud to honor her by providing financial support.
Jo's legacy lives on in additional HARK programs in the Club's Kitsap and Olympia branches. Kitsap's Laura Rightmeyer leads hikes and active recreation, such as hikes, rock climbing, snow shoeing, kayaking on day and overnight trips. The Olympia program is an ambitious effort in partnership with the Mountaineers Foundation, Big Brothers Big Sisters of Thurston County, Washington State Parks and Recreation, and local business Alpine Experience through funding, donations, equipment loans, and discounts. The program introduces children and their adult mentors to the great outdoors by taking them on hikes, paddle trips, showshoe outings, and rock gym adventures, all while providing outstanding outdoor education.
The Mountaineers Foundation is proud to support this and many other public-benefit programs run by the Mountaineers Club. Your support is essential to keep these programs going and improve our environment and our community. Please donate today to ensure this work continues to leave a lasting legacy to future generations.
