mag_climb3The Mountaineers Club moved to new headquarters in Seattle's Magnuson Park in October 2008. The Mountaineers Board of Trustees and the Mountaineers Foundation approved the raising of funds for Friends of Magnuson Climbing, a non-profit effort to purchase a manufactured boulder for the South Plaza of the building, located at the north end of Magnuson Park and formerly the motor-pool facility for the naval station that once existed there. The boulder, like the south climbing wall that is being constructed, will be donated to the City of Seattle, managers of the park. The south plaza will be open to the public and will play an important educational role for both the public and The Mountaineers, according to Mountaineers project manager Gene Yore. “The south wall and boulder are state-of-the-art replacements for Schurman Rock,” stated Yore, a longtime climber and climb leader with the club who referred to a rock that accommodated urban field trips for climbing students all the way back to the 1940s. The new rock will be quite different in composition, however. Unlike the mountain-born material that volunteers used to build Sherman Rock, the new boulder will be composed of artificial materials that simulate the real thing.mag_climb1

Over $35,000 has been raised for a climbing boulder that features prominently on the site. An additional fundraising efforts are underway to add belay tower / climbing pinnacle for instruction and practice which will require up to $120,000. This feature will also be donated to the Seattle Parks Department and will be available for use by the public.

Please donate to support making stat-of-the-art climbing facilities available to the citizens of the greater Puget Sound area.
